A tour of the "Talaiots"

Trail 3 Algaida, Montuïri, Porreres, Manacor, Son Servera

*Talayot de Son Coll Nou On the main road to Manacor, near Algaida, there is a turning, signposted to the talayot of Son Coll Nou. Although it has suffered some alterations, it is well conserved and is worth a visit.

*Son Fornés This prehistoric building is to one side of the road from Montuïri to Pina. It is one of the best known settlements in Majorca. The excavation that has been carried out gives one an idea of its scale. The first talayot is one of the best examples on the island and it is formed of great blocks of stone with a huge monolithic lintel in the entranceway. Inside there is a spectacular central column. The second talayot has an entrance from the outside and has a central supporting column.

The excavation of the talaiots of Son Fornés offered a general vision of
the whole settlement
Around it there are nine rooms, which were in use from prehistoric times to the Roman era.
There is an exhibition of objects found in the excavation in the Molí d'en Fraret (Montuïri).

*Sa Muralta des Pou Celat This settlement can be reached by leaving Porreres in the direction of Felanitx and then taking the lane to Son Mesquida. It is a typical talayot construction, in a fairly good state of repair, and is probably part of a larger hamlet still buried in the surrounding countryside.

*S'Hospital Vell Take the road towards Portocolom, and then the turning to Cales de Mallorca. The second gateway on the right opens onto a lane that leads to the settlement. It is one of the biggest settlements in Majorca and has various differing features of interest. In the first place, the remains of two barrow like structures that would appear to be part of a pre-talayot complex. Secondly, the magnificent square site is a construction of carefully fashioned ashlars that would not seem to correspond to the cyclopean approach of talayotic building techniques, and which poses an archaeological dilemma. The third feature of interest is a square talayot.

S'Illot From s'Hospitalet Vell it is easy to get to s'Illot, where there is another of the best known settlements on the island, and which is also a typical example of talayotic culture. There is an oval-shaped cyclopean wall, a central monument or talayot that presides over the settlement and a series of rooms within the walls. Not far from this site, on the Paseo de Ses Palmers de sa Coma, there is another talayot, called na Pol. One can also go to Son Servera and see the two talayots at Pula, which are next to the restaurant of the same name.

The talaiotic settlement of s'Illot is a typical example of its kind

* Talayots signposted and visitable.
