A tour to the Nature Reserves

MONDRAGÓ NATURE RESERVE

Relevant protecting legislation: Nature Reserve (Decree 85/92 by the Government of the Balearic Islands. Area of Special Natural Interest (Act 1/90 approved by the Balearic Parliament). Special Bird Protection Area (EEC Directive 79/409)
Area: 785 hectares, of which 95 are publicly owned and 690 hectares are in private hands.
Location: in the south-east of Majorca, 5 kilometres from Santanyi.

Physical environment Mondragó is on the coastal platform of the east coast of Majorca. Most of the area is formed of marine deposits similar to those of reefs or swamps.

Flora The different walks signposted through the nature reserve permit observation of varying types of vegetation. Three are highlighted here:
Wetlands: In s'Amarador, so called because it was used as a pool where hemp and flax were macerated and retted, rushes, reeds, and bulrushes are abundant. In the water there are colonies of beaked tasselweed (ruppia maritimum) and other seaweeds. Close to the shore grow tamarisks and scorpion senna. The dunes: Especially in s'Amarador it is possible to see a good example of the type of vegetation typical of Mediterranean dune systems. In the dune nearest the shore, the main plants that hold the sand in place include: marram grass (Ammophila arenaria), sea holly (Eryngium maritimum), curry plant (Helichrysum stoechas), germander (Teucrium), and sea daffodils. The juniper groves: The maquis in Mondragó is particularly unusual as it includes juniper, because here it grows in rocky subsoil and not in sand dunes as is normal in the rest of Majorca. It is present along with species such as pine, the mastic tree, mock privet, the common reed, rockrose, and tree heath.

Fauna Among the reptiles present, the Mediterranean tortoise (Testudo hermanni) deserves special mention as it has reintroduced after becoming extinct in the area. There are also false smooth snakes and viperine snakes (Natrix maura). The lagoons are particularly ideal places for migrating birds and for amphibians such as the Iberian green frog and the Eurasian green toad.

Mondragó Park presents a great variety of landscapes
